Volleyball court Measurements, lines and positions on the volleyball court

The volleyball field is the area in which a volleyball game takes place . The volleyball court is divided by a net and is delimited by lines, areas and game marks. These lines determine the measurements of the volleyball field , which is rectangular with dimensions of 18 by 9 meters. In addition, to the measurements of the volleyball court, we must add the free zone, which occupies an area of 3.5 meters on each of the four sides.

Among the main lines of a volleyball court include: Quadra Line, Center Line and Attack Line. These divide the game zones, including the free zone, attack zone, defense zone and turning zone. Consequently, a volleyball match  must have at least one referee, a linesman at the high end and one at the low end, and a scoreboard.

Volleyball is a sport that is played with a ball and in which two teams made up of six players each face each other. The objective of a volleyball game is to pass the ball over the net, making it touch the ground of the opposing volleyball court while the opposing team simultaneously tries to prevent it from reaching it. The ball must be propelled with clean hits, but it cannot be stopped, held, retained or accompanied. Each team has a maximum of three touches to return the ball. And, one of the most unique features is that players rotate their positions in the game as they earn points.

Measurements of the volleyball court 6 vs 6

The surface of the volleyball field is rectangular and measures 18 meters long by 9 meters wide. These measurements correspond to a field where both national and international competitions are held. The volleyball court is divided by a center line separated by a net. In addition, the tracks for children have different measures to the field for adults. For children up to 10 years old, the measurements must be 9 meters by 4.50 meters wide. And, the courts for children over 11 years old, the measurements must be 12 meters long by 6 meters wide.

Dimensions of the beach volleyball court

The beach volleyball field has measurements similar to the field of the volleyball field . The surface is also a rectangle measuring 16 meters long by 8 meters wide. To facilitate the development, the vision of the game and for security, around the field of play there is a security band free of obstacles of at least 3 meters wide.

In world and official competitions of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and in official competitions of the Royal Spanish Volleyball Federation, the volleyball field must measure a minimum of 5 meters and a maximum of 6 meters wide both on the outside of the lines sides as well as baselines.

Areas of the beach volleyball court

The playing area includes the playing field and the free zone, and its minimum dimensions are 22 meters by 14 meters. In high-level national and international sports competitions, the measurements of the playing area are between 26 meters by 18 meters and 28 meters by 20 meters. The volleyball field must be separated from the public areas, if they exist, and in such a way that it does not pose a risk of injury to the players.

The volleyball marking lines are formed by elastic, flexible and non-abrasive material tapes so that they are not dangerous for the players, they measure 5 cm wide. They are of a color that contrasts with the volleyball field . The lines are anchored and tensioned in the sand at each corner by means of adjustable fixings. The anchors of the straps to the volleyball court are synthetic, wooden or metallic if they are protected from corrosion. They are nailed to a depth of not less than 25 cm. And, the fastening elements of the lines that are not protected or that can be seen, are made of flexible material.

volleyball field lines

There are two sidelines and two bottom lines that limit the volleyball court .

  • Quadra Line: This is the line that surrounds the entire court and that marks the limits of where the ball is in play. What this means is that, if the ball touches the ground outside these lines, the team that last touched the ball gives a point to win to the opposing team, since it has sent out of the volleyball court .
  • Center Line: The court is divided into two halves, being cut in length by the center line. In this way it is possible to define which part of the volleyball field belongs to one team or the other. In addition, it also serves as a guide to align the network.
  • Attack Line: There are two lines parallel to the center line, whose distances are 3 meters from the center line to each side of the volleyball court. The reason for this volleyball line is to separate the attack area from the defense area. Therefore, this line indicates which is the prohibited area, in which the defenders cannot step and send the ball to the other half of the volleyball court . Players in defensive positions may, however, jump before that line and bunt the volleyball above the height of the net while it is suspended in the air.

Measurements of the volleyball areas

  • Attack zone: The attack zone is the area between the 3-meter line and the net. It is the area where most of the team's attacks are made on the volleyball field. An exception are the attacks of players who are in the position of full-back and who cannot cross the 3-meter line when shooting.
  • Defense Zone: It is the zone that goes from the 3-meter line to the back zone of the volleyball field . It measures 6 by 9 meters and is the area where volleyball players defend attacks and receive serves, although it can also be finished off as long as the 3-meter line is not exceeded. The volleyball court is divided into a front and back zone to differentiate the positions of the players who are in the attack or back zone. This will depend on the moment of the rotation in which the team is.
  • Free Zone: Around the volleyball field there must be an obstacle-free zone, which must include the area for benches and referees, of at least 2 meters on the indoor court and 3 meters on the outdoor court. This rule changes in international competitions, since the free zone must have measures of at least 5 meters from the sidelines and 8 meters from the bottom line.

Other parts of the volleyball field

volleyball bands

The side bands of the volleyball court are two white bands measuring 5 cm wide and 1 meter long each. They are placed vertically in the net on each sideline. They are considered part of the net and mark the 9 meter width of the volleyball court .

Antennas on the volleyball court

There are two antennas, one at each end of the volleyball net , which are essentially two poles about 0.80 meters high above the net. Their function is to delimit the playing area. This means that for the return of the ball to the other half of the volleyball court is valid, the ball has to go over the net and between the antennas, without touching the antenna. They are two flexible rods 1.80 meters long and 10 mm in diameter, made of fiberglass or a similar material, placed at both ends of the net on the outside of each side band to delimit the limits of the area where the game can be played. ball. They will always be used in national or international competitions and their use for school, recreational or training use is optional. volleyball field .

Poles in the volleyball court

In the volleyball field, the posts are very important, since the net must be at an exact height and tension so that the course of the game can be carried out normally. This function of holding and regulating the height of the net is achieved thanks to the posts that are on each side of the volleyball court, so it is important that they are in perfect condition and very well located.

Measurements of the volleyball posts

The posts of the volleyball field are normally round and have to be located between 0.50 and 1.00 meters from the side lines of the playing field. The height must be 2.55 meters and preferably adjustable in the height of the net, to allow it to be raised or lowered to the regulation height depending on the category of the competition. They must be firmly fixed to the ground without cables, so you can usually find fixed or removable volleyball posts, each with its corresponding anchoring system. This fixation can be by means of boats embedded in the ground in a solid concrete or with bases and counterweight boxes, depending on the model of the posts and the type of volleyball field .

There are different models of posts for the volleyball field net according to your needs.

  • Fixed posts: to embed in the ground.
  • Movable poles: with wheels to be able to put them on and take them off without a problem.

In addition, you will find volleyball posts made of steel or aluminum and with a round or square section. All of them with the best materials to ensure the best maintenance and resistance results. The volleyball posts assume a fundamental role when it comes to guaranteeing a normal course of the matches, since they are in charge of ensuring that the volleyball net  is at the optimum height and tension.

Volleyball field colors

For FIVB World and Official Competitions , the lines of the volleyball court must be white. The playing field and the free zone must be of different colors. The playing field can have different colors to differentiate the attack zone from the defense zone. If you play volleyball as an amateur, the basics you will need is a large volleyball field with a net approximately 2 meters high, as we have explained in the previous points.

But, in general, the volleyball field has several predetermined colors that can vary, although they are usually light colors. The play area is usually orange, green or brown, depending on the material it is made of, these colors are linked to wood. The free zone can be colored green, blue or orange.

Volleyball and beach volleyball net

The object of the game is to pass the ball over the volleyball net to the ground of the opposing volleyball court . The volleyball net is placed vertically on the center line. The material of the net is made of synthetic fibers, with measurements of 1 meter wide and 9.50 meters to 10 meters long. The mesh is black checkered and measures 10 cm by 10 cm.

The upper part of the volleyball net is finished with a 7 cm wide horizontal top band, white in colour. Meanwhile, the lower part of the net is finished off with a horizontal band, 5 cm wide, with similar characteristics to the upper band. Through the interior of the upper horizontal band there is a cable supporting the network. In addition, the volleyball net has an upper tensioning rope and another lower tensioning rope at the lower end.

Two side bands 5 cm wide and 1 meter long are placed vertically on the net. The height of the net is indicated in the attached table and is measured from the center of the volleyball field . The height above the two side lines must be the same and must not exceed the official volleyball height by more than 2 cm . The net of the volleyball field has different measurements in men's volleyball , depending on the age categories. Therefore, the measures in the male categories are:

  • Children: 2.24 meters.
  • Cadets: 2.37 meters.

The measures in the female category are:

  • Children: 2.10 meters.
  • Cadets: 2.18 meters.

Player positions on the volleyball field

Setter position in volleyball

The setter is one of the fundamental volleyball positions  in terms of the team's offensive strategy and game distribution. One of the main functions of the setter is to be in charge of making the second touch of the ball. In addition, this player has to pass the ball to the spikers for them to attack. A setter can also be a spiker depending on whether they are in the forward positions of the volleyball court .

Outside Spike or Tip in a game of volleyball

The outside spiker position is usually filled by a very versatile player on the volleyball field . The main function of the spikes is generally the attack. Therefore, players in extreme spiker positions not only need great coordination skills and intelligence, but they also need to be great spikers and blockers. The outside spiker is the volleyball player who hits and blocks on the front left side of the volleyball court .

Opposite position in volleyball

The opposite is the player who makes the most of the team's spikes. When he is in the front zone of the net in the volleyball court, he is in position 2. And, when he is in the back zone in position 1, always in the opposite position of the setter. His role as a blocker is fundamental, since he blocks in the right zone of the volleyball net .This is right around the part where he attacks the opposing team's outside finisher, who is usually a player with a big punch. Therefore, an opposing player with a high block can offset the attack strength of the opposing team.

Central volleyball player position

The player who occupies the central position on the volleyball field is the owner of the center of the net. In addition, he is the main blocking asset of the team. He plays position 3 and among his duties is to often finish off right next to the setter with a fastball.

Libero on the volleyball field

The libero is the team's defensive specialist. The player who occupies the libero position on the volleyball court wears the shirt of another color and only plays in the back zone. He cannot attack or block, so height is not a fundamental requirement to play on this volleyball court . Liberos tend to have exquisite forearm touch and are quick and agile on defense. They need it to be able to lift impossible balls.
